Youth Related Anti-Social Behaviour in Bakewell

Following on from recent reports of Anti-Social Behaviour in Bakewell, 6 youths have been identified, from cctv, knocking on doors at properties close to Rutland Recreation Ground and running away before the occupier can get to the door.  Some of the addresses targeted are occupied by elderly people, some of which have mobility issues.  

Parents have been informed, all of which have been very supportive and they will be educating their children about the upset they are causing to the residents.

The youths spoken to have also been very remorseful and would like to pass on their apologies to those targeted.  

All youths identified have received an anti-social behaviour warning letter which is the first stage of the anti-social behaviour process.   The Anti-Social Behaviour warning letter is a formal notification to both the child and parent detailing their antisocial behaviour and requesting their parents support in addressing their childs behaviour.  They are allowed two warnings within a 12 month period, after that more formal action is put in place.  This is not criminalising the child.  With young people we would rather educate them about their actions in order that they can make the correct decisions going forwards and consider how their behaviour may impact others.  In the majority of situations the young people concerned don't come to our attention again to receive a second warning.  

Following discussions with many people in the community, including the elderly, many have confessed that they too used to do this kind of thing as a child when they were getting upto mischief!!  Please do not assume there is any mallice in their actions - unfortunately they just haven't thought about who is at the other side of the door and the impact it can have.

We appreciate the parents continued support going forwards and for assisting us with this.   

The police do take these matters seriously and urge anyone that is being targeted by anti-social behaviour to let us know so we can help.
